Why does flags evoke feelings of pride and patriotism so quickly? Flags are social emblems that serves to unite us, pulls us through collective hardships and activates solidarity. Liberty Leading the People by Eugène Delacroix, Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima by Joe Rosenthal, Very Little Helps by Banksys - The arts have also proven flags have become conscious of itself without fixing upon itself as simply a piece of cloth.
RAISE UP! seeks to give its visitor the same feeling of solidarity, allowing them the opportunity of raising a flag. The flag lacks any symbols or graphics and would gain its on consciousness through the ritual raising of the flag provided by the visitors themselves.
Steps are lined up with the existing lifeguard station’s rungs and leads to a platform, greeting the user with instructions on how to raise the flag. The interactive sculpture mimics the lifeguard station in structure and color, leaving the activity of raising the flag as the focal point.
